The table indicates the expected primary current for the classes shown. Your transformers probably have a similar table in the power application standards for the country they are used in.
The BIL (basic Impulse Level) for the transformer will let you know how durable the secondary is on over voltage, with the pulse characteristics of lightning. Since power substations ground the low voltage secondary to protect the instrumentation, your danger zone for the unit is to keep the low voltage winding heat low enough to prevent burn out.
Your driver I^R wattage needs to be watched.
How many watts will be dissipated in a flaming arc produced by the transformer?

Hello radiotech
Thank you very much for your explanations.
your danger zone for the unit is to keep the low voltage winding heat low enough to prevent burn out.
You're right, I'm aware of this too. In another high voltage forum I found the following infomation from a supplier of potential transformers:
For 30 minutes the trasformer can take 1.5x limiting thermal output power or for 6 minutes 3x limiting termal output power.
I'm not sure, if this rule can be applied for every potential transformer, but I think it is a realistic approximation. Limit thermal output power is 600VA for each transformer in my case, so this means 6A for the 100V Windings. According to this rule, I could choose a current of 3*6A = 18A. So this will be 1800VA for one transformer, or 3600VA for both. I will make sure the power will be approximately in this range.
For my bigger potential transformer (picture: ), which is about 55kg and has three heavy wires in parallel on the 100V side, I applied for some seconds a current of more than 40A without any problem, but I know, this might be risk. The low-voltage-wire of the showed potential transformers is thinner than the wire of the 55kg monster, maybe because they are newer and less heavy (just about 26kg per transformer).
