Working in Manhattan brings me piece of mind. As a matter of fact I do not get in contact with anyone on a daily basis.

The communicable virulence of the disease does not make it as statistically lethal as a flu.
However, the story of Typhoid Mary truly highlights what people are capable of doing.

In such a scenario, the Yellow-Jack must be flown high and 40 days in the harbor they must wait... The Quarantine policies prior to immunizations often violated civil rights in ways this generation has never conceived...

Recall at one time, immigrants were tested for HIV/AIDS prior to leaving their respective lands.
The test-and-block of individuals' access historically has been ineffective...

Trust in that if this is a disease that mostly kills poor people too (like now)...
There will never be a cure...

as someone who lives in Dallas, there are those who are scared but they are few.
Most people here know we have a good healthcare system, and even those who live in close proximity to the three cases are not too worried except those who were very close to the patients.

Ebola is an interesting case for the relatively well read layperson such as myself since it has such a high mortality rate, but is difficult to transfer to others in that it requires the transfer of bodily fluids while showing symptoms. Given the R0 value of Ebola at 2, and that of a disease most people consider a non-issue such as Measles with an R0 of 18, which do you think is the bigger threat to a community with a good healthcare system? The one most people are concerned about actually is Measles despite there being a very effective vaccine, as many parents are opting not to vaccinate their children (and with the often abused religious exemptions, this trend is growing fast).

I can understand people's fears, and I personally have a SHTF location established and have been rebuilding my bug out bag, but I'm more concerned about civil unrest than a viral outbreak such as Ebola. Now an airborne disease warrants extreme caution, but Ebola is not one of them.

Cheers,

-Jim

I have never had a flu shot nor the flu :) I also never use flouride my teeth are great I don't alow the school to give my child fouride. I think allot of the stuff they give out like candy is propaganda personally. Not to disagry but if we have no idea how to cure it what does health care have to do with ebola besides pay for your death bed at the hospital?

While we have no cure for the Ebola virus, we have a system of care that can help treat patients (which allows for that chance of survival), but more importantly we have a higher standard of hygiene and a better cultural understanding of medicine which means it is less likely to become widespread domestically. Countries with large ebola outbreaks have them in areas where lack of access to modern medicine, hygiene, and cultural differences enable the large numbers of infections.

I did hear that one treatment involves using blood plasma from people who have recovered from ebola to treat victims, but the maths doesn't really add up (not enough people have recovered to treat everyone)

So DaJJHman, you're saying there is no cure, but you have faith in medicine? HEHEHE.

Mankind acts just like panicked cattle in a crisis situation, just watch a soccer match.

I don't understand how you could have faith when all the evidence that surrounds us on a daily basis, says otherwise. Go to youtube and watch "Trust Me, I'm an Engineer"

What I say is that given a higher standard of living in the US with regard to health and hygiene than the places afflicted with large ebola outbreaks, we are not going to experience a large outbreak here. I don't have faith in modern healthcare and medicine, I know we have the ability to deal with it by not having the conditions for effective spread in the first place.
