What are your thoughts? And what equipment is used to screen for it?
My thoughts are that no one really understands how ebola is contracted I have heard that it is not possible to get it from some on a bus but in the same sentince they contradict themselfs by saying you could get it by coming in contact by simply bumping in to that indavidual and getting some sweat on yourself even a sneeze can make it airbourn some even say it is already airbourn or evolving to just that. I start seeing people comming down with ebola I will invest in bio suites and good gas masks call me crazy but hemorratitic flu does not sound plesant. What would you do if you had to protect yourself and your family?

Apparently, only 50-70% of people who get ebola die, so 30-50% of us will be ok wink

There really isn't much you can do.

Stop coming in contact with people? But what about all the people that prepare the food you're going to put in your mouth?
Or pumping gas at the gas station?
Or anything for that matter.

We live in a global network of interactions, and the only real way to deal with this thing is quarantine, and special pills (0.223) for those who violate a quarantine order.

This thing is death, it is that dangerous, and the people in charge of preventing the rest of us getting this thing have no idea what they are dealing with. We are living the movie "12 Monkeys" right now, it is that scarry, but there really isn't a whole lot we can do.

The first problem is the US government is incompetent. The second problem is this virus is super lethal. they say 50-70% but i think in larger populations it'll be closer to 80%.

And people self monitoring is worthless, by the time they report symptoms, thery're already shedding virus. If some one sheds virus and you touch their door knob, then touch a mucous membrane, you've got it. Thats not fear mongering, thats a hemorrhagic fever that kills even world class experts who have spent there entire medical careers dealing with infectious, life ending diseases.

This virus wont cause the American people to run through the streets in a panic, but our F'ing incompetent government responses will.

The CDC has had more money than God spent since 9/11, and yet they can't control 3 people. And the CDC couldnt wait to blame those two nurses, i knew that was coming, the agency must protect itself, even if they have to throw others under the bus.

The real problem at government agencies like the CDC is medical professionals arent making the decisions, political hacks are. And if a few get killed, oh well, politics is the first priority.

If 50 people make it to Europe, 100 to latin America, or 75 to Asia, that's the road to a pandemic.

In my opinion, it all depends how quickly the drug companies can 'deliver the goods'.

While ebola has been around for some time, previous strains weren't as contagious, and outbreaks were contained. It hasn't (until now) been PROFITABLE for the drug companies to do the R&D.

While I don't like to get into politics on this forum (this thread is in the 'general chatting' bit), I think there is an argument for nationalising the drug companies, or, at least, some form of influence be exerted, although this outbreak couldn't really have been forseen at this time, but was probably inevitable at some point.

Drug companies aren't about 'doing the right thing', they are there to make profits for shareholders (assuming the shareholders survive this outbreak).

EDIT: some sources have predicted up to half a million deaths by Xmas, or thereabouts. Numbers are doubling every two to three weeks and the aid being sent to Africa isn't expected to start slowing the spread for at least another six weeks, maybe more.

Ash , there have always been "orphan" drugs and treatments, and those should be subsidized for the public good. This is probly one of those cases. There are enormous stockpiles of drugs at Fort Knox, with our gold for example. (There was even a time when we Americans hoarded helium under ground to keep it away from the Germans and Russians, in case of war.) Critical vaccines and drugs developed at taxpayer expense should be contract based to avoid profiteering or the drug companies taking huge losses.

And yes, if it starts increasing geometrically at 10-20k per week, how are we to stop there fleeing into other nations at large numbers?

C-5A Galaxy transports should be arriving on a regular baisis with whatever these African nations need. they are handing the situation better than we are anyway.

EDIT: Those non-contact thermometers, are a joke, you can leave with no symptoms, then show symptoms once your off the plane somewhere else.

I don't think there is too much to worry about at the moment, but if it does spread to 'the West' all you can really do is avoid cities and head for the mountains, just like in the movies wink

A lot of people will be doing the same, though.
