This is what you can do with a gigapixel camera and for normal people it beats a TC every time.

Uh, this is a composite image. I could achieve this same image with my old 4 Megapixel DSLR.

I think it's a nice way to show how far digital cameras still have to go.

What do you mean "still have to go?" As far as pixel count, additional pixels isn't really going to improve images when it comes to general everyday use. The big improvements will be less noise, etc...

Ok, Ok, I thought you guys would think it was cool. Nevermind. BTW, I LOVE your new signature Steve! LOL!

IIRC, it was a second, not a minute! At least with stove thing..

For our (my) needs anything more than some 10mp's probably would not be useful anyway.
Not to say 100 times that..

OMG Bjoern, that Sydney By Night image is incredible! You can zoom in to the point of seeing people in the office block windows. I don't care if it was made out of 100 digital images stitched together. (EVR: why not download the free trial of the Autopano software and give it a try?)

I totally agree that it's more impressive than a Tesla coil, too. wink

The free version of the software is here: Autostitch
It is more confusing settings and has far less options but it works very well. The confusing settings make no difference in normal cases because the algorithm is 100% automatic.

Just get a $500 telescope. You can zoom in on any windows in your city in realtime.

Actually if you guys actually read the article, which i think maybe only Steve Conner did (as he previously stated), that this is NOT a gigapixel camera. What is being created is an actual process to create a a gigapixel image or print.

Er, I did reads it. That's why I said it's an ilustration of the fact that film captures more pixels than digital. That picture of Sydney is beautiful, but remember how much fiddling about it took to get that image. You can get the same resolution with a single expoure and a (very expensive) large format camera with a good lens. If you really need to capture that much data you are better off using film. If you want to take snapshots at a party then the sort of 2Meg camera built into a mobile phone is probably good enough. (And you can't ring for a taxi on a large format camera)
