Now, these IGBTs, for those who will not open the PDF are: - 1700V max - 800A with 1600A pulse.
From my, rather uneducated guesses. The highest bus voltage i could likely run it at is around 1400V or maybe 1500V
For the products we make, the limit we use for 1700v IGBTs is 1kV DC bus voltages. This is for hard switched variable frequency drives/inverters. For snubbing we only use tab capacitors will very low ESR on the modules. You could probably safely increase the bus voltage if you used some RCD snubbers, but we don't because the efficiency hit.
Okey! thats some useful infomation, i just hope these IGBTs do work in the end. well worst case is they don't, not like i paid anything for them anyway. Would look neat to mill the top off and pot the insides with clear epoxy, use them as coasters
he said he might even had some more to send me at a later date :D

Cool, that sounds useful, would you be able to link me to them as they are not showing up on my searches? And sure, i think it might be a better idea to make a lower frequency one first before trying to rise it.

Awesome, do tell me how that goes. Not sure if i can afford those cores for some time (spent huge loads and its gonna take me a while to get my bank account up to a resonable amount again.
GREAT NEWS!
The igbts are just fine it turns out, i was being an idiot and trying to use C1 and E2 E1 and C2. as a result it looked like it wasn't working, this was mostly because i got confused at the pin layout on the IGBT. however i realise that it makes no sence, just a silly moment.
But great, they all work :)
I have been thinking of maybe using a single brick as the driver for a monster boost converter. i think that could be rather awesome, maybe 100-1000v out i think.

They are slow-ass devices. The good news is that in a DRSSTC, the resonant zero current switching makes slow devices go a lot faster than you might expect. I would be reasonably confident trying these in a bigass DRSSTC at 30kHz.

Awesome. I have some fibreoptic drivers on the way from the original machine, i intend to have a test with them and see if they could be of any use.
What i need now is a good powersupply for this. Might make one with some ferrite i have, any reccomendations on what circuit to use to drive the ferrite that will power whole IGBT module? Likely i will do 2 sets of -5v+15v on the transformer with a zero tapping.
I have got 10 of these for use: not sure if they are up to scratch however...
Could you imagine somthing like the giganator using these kind of IGBTs, that would be awesome, but a bit far off now frankly.
How much current do i likely need for each part of the module and how do i work that out?

See my Odin thread for the gate driver design I used. It should drive these devices easily.
Cool, i had a quick look at that. Interesting design. Much like you suggested in a later post that you are looking into fibre control, im thinking of doing the same as that. Mostly because fibreoptic always looks like an awesome thing to use.
Currently im looking around for a largeish DC motor or somthing else to use as a load for when im developing / messing around with IGBT controls. One of my other thoughts is to use a large load of water heaters or such as a load, but i think a motor would be more entertaining and easier to see changes.
Is there any way to calculate the peak current for gate input and average?
