Thx Ash, this worked better than capacitor. Still, tube emits X-rays, but they won't light up the screen. I think they are of sufficient energy, but there is simply not enough of them. HV regulates the energy in keV, and filament regulates the flux?

I have an idea; I will place a voltage doubler between dimmer and iggy coil. Would this increase the output voltage? Or would this interfere with chopped up sine wave of the dimmer (triac)?

Today I finally got proper, clear radiographs, with about 90kv from dual ignition coil and 50uF capacitor, 2C2S (similar to 2X2A). I'd be happy if not the fact that while I was searching for some target relay failed and it started to emit x rays. I don't know for how long it worked before I noticed but certainly more than one minute. What can I expect? I'm kind of worried...

Depends on tube current, proximity, directionality, etc.

Skin burns are characteristic of low energy X-ray exposure at high dose rates.

A white blood cell count can help determine if bone marrow damage has occured.

Chances are you're probably ok if you don't get ill or see any skin effects.

I have no way to determine tube current, but I think it's about 5-10mA, it's a rough estimate. Distance was more or less 50cm. I guess the dose received was not more than 50mSv, and interwebs say leukemia risk increases above 100mSv but still, this was not particularly healthy.

Anyone has any idea what would be 2c2s radiation output at 90kvac? I searched the interwebs but couldn't find anything.

X-ray tubes typically output 0.1 of 0.1% of x-rays vs current

so 1mA (=1.6 x 10^16)gives 1.6 x 10 ^12 x-rays per /sec or about 1.6 tera bequerel

Johnf, so what would be effective dose? I know something about activity, but 1.6 TBq is really big number so I don't know what to make of it

Yeah, reducing the current with a 1 G ohm series resistor would be the first thing I'd try.

5642s are pretty sensitive to overcurrent and a tube which worked perfectly well with pulsed power failed within seconds in continuous mode.
