Yep sounds like a fet death. You can start the interrupter before or after or with the bridge, doesn't matter when, but turning it off after the bridge ensures bus capacitance is discharged.
How high your frequency is directly correlates to how hard the fets and UCC chips get pushed.
I get best results using a coiled antenna a few inches from the secondary no higher than top primary turn. You don't want HV on the antenna.
