We'd need to have a lethal blast before I get any aurorae here in FL >.<

Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances (SID) can be caused by solar flares, and observed by ULF/VLF monitoring.

There are a number of online VLF/ULF observatories with live feed that one can look at:

The Northern Cross ULF/VLF Radio Telescope in Italy is one such, and you can look at its live output here: Link2

I am very interested in ULF/VLF myself, but live close to a power station with a switching farm and double rows of giant pylons that radiate low frequency noise so well you'd think they had been designed to do it.

I too had an interest in vlf/ulf, using this site a lot Link2
I too live near a national grid junction, about 300m ! cry
My workmate has done a lot of vlf/ulf stuff,
(Mark Stone ... trying to get membership here)
including collecting lots of info. on early battlefield use of 'ground radio communications'
he had a website but closed it down as he got upset with
so many folks that copied his stuff to their website
with neither permission nor acknowledgement

thanks for the link to the Medicina site.

Yes, we do see them come and go.

I may have mentioned elsewhere that I was a member of an online ELF group for several years, until I realised that all conversations came round - in the end - not to talk about ELF being a great tool for understanding the natural world, but to adversarial obsessions with Cold War-era 'national security'.

The quality of research and innovation by the Italian guys at Radio Waves Below 22kHz never fails to delight me - though they all seem to have big gardens to put up their antennas, or they live out in the countryside without a power pylon in site. smile

Similar for amateur radio, ... acres of antenna space
(and seemingly no limit on transmit power!
Italians come blasting through here in uk)
and me in a suburban semi-d. surrounded by trees and pylons frown
(must bragg a little...first time on air, 20m, Midlands to Newfoundland 5&9 !!)

For elf/ulf/vlf work,
a battery powered recorder and equipment in a remote hide are required
to operate on this crowded island.

Hmm. Seems that back in 2012 we missed a Carrington class event by a stone's throw (ie a few days).

EDIT: Link2 Looks like I might be testing my magnetometer sooner than I thought.
