Hi all.
Seems that on Thursday, aurorae were seen as far south as Jersey and most of the UK.

The sunspot responsible is rotating towards us so if it unleashes an X-class flare in the next few hours then we could see even more intense displays.

Awesome! I'm in Idaho, which is higher than Jersey so hopefully I can see it. It's kinda cloudy though :(

Thanks for posting, will be sure to have a look at the sky later on. I was outside but too drunk staggering home when the aurora was visible the other night. ill

I think Conundrum was referring to the Bailiwick of Jersey which is an Island off the coast of Southern England.

Yes this is correct, not New Jersey.
With AR1991 growing by the hour the chances of another large earth directed CME are increasing.

Not really your fault - it seems early English and European settlers were a pretty unimaginative bunch when it came to naming their new homes. My whole country is named after a Danish Island ffs.

And which Danish Island would that be?

My guess is that he is from New Zealand and he refers to our island called "Sjælland" or Zealand or Seeland in English.

But it also seems that writings and misreadings could have lead to a mistake as the European explorer of New Zealand is from Holland and named it Zeeland after a region in Holland.

You are right, the Dutch region is a more likely source for the name. Once again - duplicate names everywhere, even in Europe it seems.

Looks like Zeeland was a popular name:

Sorry for dragging the thread off topic.

There are even duplicate villages or towns everywhere

In Belgium there are plenty of "Frasnes" for instance, and people appended extensions to distinguish them like "Frasnes-lez-Anvaing" or "Frasnes-les-Buissenal" etc... and there are also "Frasnes" in France
