Eric, does pulse skipping work as well as bus/bridge modulation to get the nice long straight QCW sparks?
I had a look at pulse skipping (exactly as you described) as a quick and dirty way of making a modulator for a QCW coil, but the simulations I ran suggested that the primary current ramp wouldn't be particularly smooth, which was one of the things steve suggested was pretty important to get nice sparks. Could be that my simulation wasn't that great - I'm not really sure of the best way to model the QCW spark loading.
If it does work okay then I'll give it a go, would certainly be easier to quickly lash up and test than the phase shift modulation controller I'm currently working on.

Dunno about whether ramp up with pulse skipping is smooth enough for straight sparks. A high inductance primary wiil make rampup more even. On the other hand it seems that you need a high frequency for straight sparks implying a low capacitance high voltage MMC for that case.

Yeah, this was my concern, hence why I asked Eric about his experiences doing it this way. My tank circuit is reasonably high impedance (20+ ohms) but the simulations I did still showed it ramping up quite unevenly.
