Some questions in this test did not make much sence to me,

but here is my result non-theless;

Economic Left/Right: -1.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.97

Huh... I didnt expect that to be potted near center.

Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: 0.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.36

HAHAHHA I have a Germanium bias! But that's really good because they make the best detectors, so long as you load them properly.

Damn, I'm closer to being a hippie than I realized.

Wow, old thread.

Thought I'd re-take the test just for fun, see what's changed now that I'm older:

Economic Left/Right: -3.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.03

Weird. I'm sure the test is not particularly accurate, given statements like "some people are naturally unlucky." I'm not aware of any particular political alignment having a monopoly on superstition.

I had the same idea after I saw this thread, and after 3 years at UCSB I have shifted from (-0.75, -0.97)to (0.38,-1.59)
I found the change in economic left/right somewhat uprising, as I have always considered myself slightly right--the joys of a hippie school wink

Factors such as 'luck' are used to explain inequality in capitalist societies i.e. that the poor are somehow 'unlucky' rather than being victims of capitalism.

Interesting. On this side of the pond, I much more often hear poverty attributed to laziness or poor work ethic. I assume that's because people who are unlucky deserve help, while people who are lazy do not. It never occurred to me that the statement might be hinting at something like that.

I should really have said that 'luck' - or the lack of it - is one of a raft of populist rationalizations used to explain poverty under capitalism, including idleness, and lack of initiative, as you say.

When we look at capsule phrases like 'down on his luck,' 'luck' emerges as a consistent strand winding in an out of poverty and destitution - as a quick Google for 'down on his luck' confirms.

I think it's the other way round: socialists use "inequality under capitalism" as an excuse for idleness and lack of initiative.

tongue

I also think Nicko deserves +4 Conservative points for waiting 4 years before answering the thread.
