The rate at which members join 4HV? When I joined 4HV in Jul 2011, there were only 4K people here. Bit over two years later and there's over 40K members? Earlier this year it wasn't even 10K. What happened to make everyone suddenly join 4HV? I'm curious to see a graph of this... I want to plot a regression line on it to see the rate of 4HV's projected growth... is there any way I can easily obtain a table of the member's join dates/member number so I can crunch some numbers on it? Then again, I'm not sure what I'd use to crunch that much data... Excel if I remember correctly can hold only up to 9999 rows of data...

You're talking to someone that barely knows Java and is in the process of learning it.

In the box on the left called "Online" it claims there is, at the time I am writing this, 2581 members.

That is a considerably more sensible number than 40k in my opinion.

Perhaps the 40k figure is all the people who have ever been a "member" here, including spammers and others who have been banned/deleted?

I see the 2851 number too... where are you looking AshPOD, and seeing 40k?

You're talking to someone that barely knows Java and is in the process of learning it.

python is easier than java, and with those libraries you have the exact same capacities as matlab or any other pro package

learning a language is only a matter of weeks to get used to the syntax, and besides that if you get the correct philosophy you'll be able to learn any simple language as python, C or java in a matter of weeks

it's a bit like getting stuck on the SGTC principle and not learn SSTC or DRSSTC, you don't get the juice of it :)

but I understand totally that it may not be straightforward for all

python has the advantage of a console-driven execution, so you can do something like

declare matrix_var matrix
load "data.txt" into matrix_var
-- do anything you need with the matrix, like divide by another one, or mask, or anything using numpy functions
open plot
setplotwidth(x)
setplotheight(y)
plot(matrix_var, interpolation, graph_type, ...)
display plot

it can be done in something like under ten lines of code dynamically

there are also some commands to fetch data from sources like databases or online files, etc...

Possibly it is due to this: (posted by our head admin Chris Russell in Feb 12)

Just a quick note to let everyone know that 4hv.org is currently under attack from a botnet. The botnet is spamming the forum incessantly, and so far IP bans have not been effective. The botnet has apparently been creating users for this purpose for the better part of a year, so I've had to go back and delete all accounts that appear to be inactive. Apologies if you're a lurker who has been caught up in this sweep.

If you click on the 'Members' link in the top left hand corner you get 130 pages of 40550 members and the times and dates that they joined. All the info you require for your graph is there. Good luck smile
