avast antivirus, malwarebytes anti malware, and CCleaner is all it takes for being protected well enough under windows
This is the combo that I use at this time. I also found Glary utilities to cover some of the CCleaner misses and HighJackThis to cleanup persistent issues (highjakthis runs at such a low level that many malware dont even know or protect themselves against its use). Finally it is most useful getting familiar with the services list and make a copy. that way you can spot an intruder righ away. Glary has good tools to view programs that are triggered at startup and listing services (also use the computer management tool in the Microsoft accessories.) That way you can spot rogues that are removed by the anti-malware but will re-start under a different name at the next boot.
