There has been one so-far unsubstantiated report of new Flir firmware version which stops the hack - check the eevblog thread before ordering, or at least check that firmware is 1.19.8 or earlier til we know more.
I will update the first post in the eevblog thread with any further information.

As regards dead pixels - mine showed plenty when I turned the masking off, set the temp range to minimum and use a high contrast palette, but you really don't see anything when masking is on, even at 320x240

What is your source for this unsubstantiated report? Is there a link for it?
Thanks

UPDATE:
Okay, the firmware in my unit is 1.17.1.

SUCCESS. Very easy to upgrade.

Thanks for your investigation, solution, and documentation Mike! Very nice indeed!!

I wonder if companies will be more careful with the possibilities of un authorized modding, there are economic forces pushing them to develop a high capability product, then dumb it down and release several lesser devices and call it a product family.

One post by a new user reportijng second-hand that a unit returned from repair had 1.20 firmware.
People have seen units with cal dates less than a week ago still with 1.19.8 FW.

Can't you just take the IR filter out of any old crap camera that has a CCD and use that?

No, although some really old CCD cameras could be modified if the bare chip was exposed.
When "exposed" I mean the colour filters removed using chemicals.

I did make a detector for alpha particles and was amazed to find that the cameras used on older Apple desktop PCs work fine.

No. The sensors are completely different. Your typical camera CCD sensor is made from Si and can only sense a limited amount of thermal radiation - generally about 1um or less. This is basically called near IR. Thermal sensors on the otherhand can detect thermal radiation on other order of 10-15um. This is the typical radiation emitted by a warm body.

Infrared photography only looks at the near infrared using special filters or film. They cannot be used for thermal imaging.

there are some intensifier tubes, but they are huge for a small amplification ratio and nearly unobtainium...

I've got a friend who has a tube at least 1m long with a dia of 7cm, which has a massive PSU, and only gives a faint orange shaded image with ultra high latency...

No. CCDs have no sensitivity in the LWIR range
