The mid-air breakup of two passenger liners in the 1950s brought metal fatigue to the forefront of airframe design, and Solartron were there to supply designers with the test instruments the improved technology needed.
An uncle of mine was grounded at this time until they replaced the square windows with round ones. He was an engineer/navigator flying comets with BOAC. All in all four comets crashed, the first two on take-off which were blamed on pilot error, the last two were BOAC planes which broke up in mid-air. The first of these was blamed on bad weather, but after the second one broke up they were grounded.
EDIT: Apparently another comet, flown by South African airways also crashed after breaking up in mid-air.

Well, it looks like I've found a 'good home' for this.....An 'audiophile' who apparently once won a magazine competition for what was described as the 'best valve amp ever', but who never did anything to promote it, he 'just built it for himself'.....according to various sources......I'm taking it round to him on Saturday, I'll try to 'glean' some more 'facts' and report here later. (sounds like the 'true 4HV spirit'.)
He's said he 'may' have the valves I need for a Telequipment D33 'scope that I picked up at the same time as I picked up this. Seems like a fair swap.
I've been looking for an excuse to meet him for a while

It is a nice instrument that probably merits a period correct restoration if the insides are good. If you get into designing audio cross-overs and feedback circuits or doing compensation circuits for seismographs (although the frequency range is a bit low end limited for that), for example.
My first reaction if I came across one of these would be to place it next to my HP 332A distortion meter and the Phillips GM2317 low distortion oscillator on my work bench. They date from the days I was involved designing very high fidelity speakers and amplifiers. Now the weak link in my audio setup are my ears!!
Excellent development, I can relate. Very nice that you found someone who will appreciate the unit in its "second" life.
