when i was a young kid, i built a CW multiplier on a breadboard and at 700 to 800 volts (0.1 inch pin to pin), apparently breadboards deflagrate with sparks and flames. (blew a 20 amp 120Vac circuit breaker too!)
you dont want to push power through a breadboard, youll want specific wires solderded for that purpose, but all your signal and the many tiny components, thats what breadboards are good for.

I just used a bread board for a 555 Driver and where the fet was it turned brown. I have had very little issues with de soldering all components off of used circuit boards using a Grill on low it gets all of the solder hot enough with out catching the board on fire.
