I would go with LTspice or Qucs, both of them have plenty of tutorials that can help you out simulating a simple circuit like that
Getting either of these to actually simulate circuits with strong transients is like pulling teeth for me ... I have to just keep adding parasitics and twiddling with the simulation settings and praying for it to converge.

You can use Paschen's law to determine when the arc will strike. This paper has a spice model for spark gaps, if it's completely open air you can just leave off the surface conduction part.
PS. these models tend to need to be experimentally fit to be "usefull" ;)

Yes, I've also had LTSpice endlessly loop occasionally. Even in the case of convergency I sometimes find the results not plausible. Do you care to share some of the simulation settings you have tried?

Hi Pink's Brain,
Following your advice I have tried to access " this paper " however no success.
Do you mind to email it to me ?
Sure, but it's bizarre ... I checked and the URL is correct and it accesses it here with a consumer ISP account.
I suspect you are behind some (great) firewall, just changing the https to http probably would have worked as well (it's reachable from both).
Uspring : it's black magic to me ... I think to really work well with most Spice simulators you have to have a fundamental understanding of how they work and how to help them over hurdles, just like how good programmers for high performant code have to internalize the compiler.
