Fired up my 10kW (to be) CWSSTC on the weekend. Big sparks then bang!....questions!

Yup, the squealing noise indicates some kind of interference problem.

I bet that thing puts out a huge RF field!!!! Wow!

Well there may be some interference going on, but it's nothing to do with any enable pins cause my driver ICs don't have them. Sigurthur do you have any advice regarding my idea of driving the driver ICs directly from a Feedback CT?

Oh, and I know you said you don't know much about IGBTs, but based on your experience with fets, is a 650v rating enough of a safety margin for 590v rails? I'm guessing not?

Appreciate your advice!

Hmm, You might need to seriously consider shielding the driver. There's enough interference getting in to your main drive signal to cause wackiness, which means it is some major interference, heh. I still run my 3kW coil unshielded because once I realized my EMC weak point was the enable lines and tied them to Vdd my interference issues stopped.

If you don't mind the chance of them popping from transients you could probably get away with only 60V of overhead. I'd done it before using 200V fets on 177V, but I did have some deaths occasionally. I moved up to 500V fets and the deaths stopped happening. It all depends on your bridge layout. Stray inductances = voltage transients. If you don't want to stockpile IGBTs you may just want to grab some 1200V ones and call it good. But do fix the interference issue first, you'll just be blowing silicon (and cash!) if you don't fix that.

Thanks for your replies. I will try shielding the electronics this weekend with a metal box. Has anyone tried using simple Zener based shunt regulators for their electronics? It seems to me that we don't need very precise regulation for our purposes and they sure would be less susceptible to RFI than a 3 terminal regulator. And very cheap! I'll play around with this on the weekend. Oh, and I might order some of those IGBTs!

Here is the current bridge minus the snubber cap:
