If light affects the gas lamps and tubes, what effect would gamma have , and cannot this be used as a detector, for radiation? Alpha and beta may have difficulty in getting through the glass.
It has been suggested to use the neon lamp as a relaxation oscillator, with a RC network. If the operation can be made to work at some level, on the curve fig 1.1 between point A and B, 10 E-20 to 10 E -10 Amperes, would a lump of Pitchblende in darkness, give a result similar to 'discharge' of electrometer that the pioneers used ?
Today we have cheap ammeters in the form DVMs for a few dollars to use in these experiments..

I'm wondering... what advantage would this detector really have over an ion chamber? With a large enough chamber and nice enough JFET amps, you'd be able to measure even differences so slight as a change in background radiation.
