The gap will just make the magnetizing current a bit bigger than it would be otherwise. It'll probably still work fine.

what material is the toroid made out of?

I have several toroids that are powdered metal, and have an equivalent distributed air-gap...so be careful.

can you see ferrite? do you know what mode the transformer was operated in?

there are distributed gap, powered metal cores... these will have the same horrible magnetizing current as a physically gapped core.

I presume you have already read the TI/Unitrode SMPS pdf files...

The power supply in the amp was a push pull setup, its a dark green colored so I can't actually see anything.
