all MODERN photographs of Tesla transformers on the internet reveal either electric, violet nitrogen discharges that look like lightnings or some softer white glow that flows in more smooth patterns. Maybe this discharge has different QUALITIES than the blue, angular discharge.
Yes, they have different qualities. The purple glow is the spectral emmision of (most likely nitrogen) excited atoms in the air, similar to the operation of a discharge lamp. The white flame-like glow is thermal emission (black-body radiation) of superheated air or plasma.

The problem with superheated plasma explanation is that there are photographs of this superheated plasma coming in contact with hobbyists themselves...
So what kind of power does it require to create that "thermal emission" state?

If you notice, there is no coil capacitor oscillation loop,
What's this then?
The coil itself is a capacitor + inductor. Parasitic capacitance is the capacitance. So the primary has a self-frequency at which it will oscillate. I wonder if there is a cheap way to measure that frequency...
Big capacitor bank discharges at fixed intervals to power the primary.

The self-resonant frequency of a normal-sized TC primary will be several MHz up to tens of MHz. The secondary coil resonates at ~100 kHz, so this primary self-capacitance is of no use. Anyway even if it was large, you would have no way of exciting it in an SGTC. An external capacitor must be supplied.

It is like touching candle flame, you can hold it for a while. Actually the plasma arc is very similar to a candle flame. You can touch the sparks because they hit your hand only for a small fraction of a second.
