Why all the hue and cry about NSA gathering statistical data about phone calls?

But they're doing much more than that; you have to look at the whole picture...and it's not pretty.

wrote ...

Commercial for-profit operators collect, use, and sell a lot more specific data about every
Internet search we make, every online purchase, every social network write or read transaction.
Same applies to phone and cable-TV providers logging our live calls, text and voice messages,
and TV and movie selections. Geographic location of mobile devices.
Every point-of-sale transaction paid with anything except cash.

Haven't you heard, the "government" (if you can even call it that anymore) is collecting and storing all that data; credit card transactions, social contacts, email, web-sites visited...they want it all.

wrote ...

The government's uses don't scare me more than the commercial ones.

Are the commercial data collectors also buying 2 billion rounds of .40 caliber hollow points? Do the commercial collectors claim a "legal right" to a monopoly on the use of force? Do they claim a "legal" "right" to detain you indefinitely without charges, torture you, or even kill you; anywhere, at any time, for any reason (or for no apparent reason), with no accountability and no due process rights whatsoever (for the victims)?

The key question is, WHY are they doing this; i.e., how do they intend to use this data? Obviously they're not spending tens of billions of dollars building a massive state-of-the-art computer complex in Utah just to let the data sit there in storage.

Any individual can opt to get along using only pre-20th-century modes of interaction.

Which our criminal Masters would no doubt see as "suspicious" behavior in and of itself...something akin to attempting to avoid a "naked body scanner" check before boarding an airplane.

Regarding privacy: if I were to go beyond advocacy, to activism,
I would first aim to regulate and restrict our corporate antagonists.
It might be different in places where state-sponsored bombings, shootings, and jailings
are more common than deaths by lightning, dangerous creatures, or infections.

The thing is, this massive spying operation isn't happening in a vacuum. There are enough other things going on - politically, morally, economically, and militarily - that a reasonable person can draw a few reasonable conclusions...and the implications are beyond terrifying. The implications are so bad, IMO, that the average person's belief system probably won't even go there, no matter how much evidence is presented.

If the NSA hasnt crossed the rubicon yet, then theyre waist deep, and still going.

this is how free nations lose everything...

The thing is, this isn't just a case of some rogue government agency playing fast and loose with its charter. This project is way too massive in scope to have just "happened. The idea of the Orwellian all-seeing, all-knowing state has been around for a long time, and has been promoted at the highest levels of "deep government"...and now they're finally implementing it.

In some ways the US and other western governments are becoming more like the Chinese government everyday.

Is this the kind of 'New World Order' we really want?

When I read 1984 in school back in the 80's, I used to laugh and thought that was so ridiculous. Cameras everywhere - Big Brother always watching.

But we're really there now!

If you're concerned about the NSA's recently exposed shenanigan's, please sign a whitehouse dot gov petition for Edward Snowden's pardon.
Although it's already exceeded the required 100k signatures by July 09 for being heard, overwhelming support will add emphasis to it.

Of course, you'll be guaranteed a thorough examination by the NSA after registering and signing this petition...
