I get sparks from about 15 cm (6 inch) long, with a beautiful noise. Now I replaced the 811a by a TB3-750 and the sparks are a little bigger, but there is no reddening of the tube at full power. I will post a movie later.

You had to replace the filament transformer. Why not use a 572B instead ?
Looking forward for sparks videos !
If I remember well you are using a special kind of power regulation on mains side with a triac ans some other components , but I don't remeber exactly how it was designed and I can't find the shcematic, could you please repost or link it ?

Thanks for the shematics ! This might be an interesting alternative to the heavy variac when you want the power control integrated to the coil. I will try this curcuit.
However I don't understand exactly how it works. Looks like a kind of light dimmer. I just wonder how this can actually work because if the triac starts or stops conducting when voltage is not zero I think there would be disruptive problems at MOT's level.

It is a standard phase angle controller, like in a light dimmer. With high leakage transformers (such as a MOT), it can be used to control power, but also the RF envelope (shape and sound of sparks).
