Yay, first light
After ordering some replacement silicon due to a GDT flashover, I repaired the failed parts today and wound some better GDTs. In a first test I got some nice sparks out of the coil:
For better measurements of spark length I'll have to wait until I can test the coil in a larger room than my workshop.
Unfortunately I misunderstood the "major diameter" term in javaTC and made the toroid a little too large. So currently the secondary is at 75kHz instead of 100kHz, I hope I can adjust for that with the primary...
I think it is better to increase primary inductance instead of MMC capacitance. It will store more energy in the primary for a given primary current before breakout. This will increase voltage on your MMC though.

Actually the torus size didn't turn out to make much of a difference, the frequency is close to 100kHz where it was designed to be. The problem was that I measured the secondary frequency too close to the workshop ceiling, which of course increased the capacitance of the secondary resonator. Putting the coil from the workbench to the floor magically fixed that =)
