I once made a small secondary with 38AWG, wire broke for me twice and had to start all over.
The only take on this is going slow, by hand, one hand turning the pipe and one holding the wire, else you have no feeling with the tension and if you are close to breaking it.
I never had a coil unwind on me, i usually secure it with isolation tape along as I wind and take pauses, I spent 5 days winding on that little coil :D

Consider temperature changes. Low expansion copper on a high expansion plastic former will loosen if you allow the temperature to go down a few degrees. A common cause of that would be to wind in your house, but then take it into the garage or garden to varnish it. So, wind at the same or lower temperature that you intend to varnish at.

I agree with Dr. Slack. The temperature changes will have way more of an effect than you might think. I ruined two good windings when I applied varnish in a colder temperature than the coil was wound
