I see so many YouTube videos of coilers putting a frying pan on top of their DRSSTCs and cooking breakfast.

Has anybody had significant problems with induction heating of steel fasteners near your primary coil?

I just realized that I may have several problem spots.

Mainly the fasteners that support the upper platter of the coil (large 3/8" threaded rod) Link2

And the fasteners (1" SS screws) that hold down the primary supports Link2

Fres will be ~75khz and it will be running peak primary currents of around 1kA.

Any input appreciated. Just trying to seek out problems before they become expensive problems!

I've never had any issue. The only heating issue i've ever had was attempting to us mu metal to shield some electronics in a very early DRSSTC i built. The mu metal, which is designed to shield low frequency magnetic fields, got so hot it was glowing red!

In my opinion I think you will be fine. I Used zinc plated corner bracket thingys to hold up my vertical primary, I also use the same thing to securely mount my pancake coil supports.

I have not had any problems with them heating at all. Ideally, all nylon hardware should be used. But this was much easier. Fres of my coil is 77kHz and I run peak currents of about 800-850A. So yeah, I think you'll be alright smile

By the way, looks very well made. Excellent craftsmanship! Looking forward to seeing sparks. Good luck

The craftsmanship is beautiful. Thats some of nicest work i've ever seen - bar none!!!!!

Did you do all the cutting / routing manually, or did you have a CNC do it?

Beautiful!
Definately share more pics! LOVE IT!

Thanks!

I belong to the local community workshop. I've got my milling equipment at home, but they have a laser cutter and CNC router in house. The MDF shelves were cut on the router, and the primary supports were laser cut from delrin.

I've been on my toes as far as double posting, but I'll try to work in build pictures where I can. My last discussion thread died and I'm powerless to revive it without a double-post... Not sure what you guys do.

If it's new information or nobody has responded in 2 days its okay to repost. You can edit in photos without double posting by going to the attachments thread and adding your pictures there, copy the image info and edit it in whichever post you need.

Thats great. You have a great set-up with that! We just purchased a large Camaster CNC Router, but haven't gotten it all hooked up yet - still waiting for the vacuum pump for the hold-down.

Keep the pics coming! Love to see em!

Its wild! I'm a hands-on guy, and before about a month ago, everything I've ever done was with basic powertools.

Now I can turn 2 days of work into a .dxf file and 45 minutes with these wonderful machines.

I've revived my old "UD 2.1" build thread, and will post pics, questions, fails etc.

Awesome.

What software are you using for the CNC Router if i may ask?

I use Librecad, a nice open-source 2d cad. Its tricky to get the handle of, but is pretty capable. I've used autocad, and in comparison was surprised at the features it included.

They have a computer with Vectrix Cut2D at the workshop, for establishing toolpaths and creating G-Code.

As for the software used to execute the G-code and talk to the drivers, I'm not entirely sure. As far as I'm concerned, that's just a screen, a mouse, and a keyboard. :P
