The PSU does not click when not connected to the mb. It also clicks when the 5V standby is shorted.

I'm taking it that it's a dead mb.

Just to verify, remove the board from the case and stick it on a piece of cardboard, then see if you get anything when you power the system up. Are you sure that you removed all the standoffs from the case except for the ones under the holes? Sometimes cases will have preinstalled standoffs where your board does not have mount holes.
