That is so cool! Thanks for the vid Alex!
Indeed, that is a nice coil. What is that covering the secondary windings?

Black electrical tape, to hide the scabby burnt patches, flaking varnish, and the bottom 1.5" of the coil rewound with blue PVC insulated wire. smile

I had a lot of trouble with flashovers, and they eventually burnt clean through the wire near the bottom. So I thought I would try rewinding the burnt section with thicker wire as an easy way of reducing the coupling.

Interesting.
Someone should make a toroidal coil and compare the efficiency with this.
See Link2

Maybe use an old container used for 100* CDROMs?

Alternate idea, ask someone I know who has a 3D printer to print me 2 sections of a hollow minimally supported toroid, acetone vapour polish it then wind on the coil and Epoxy the sections together with each wire end carefully joined to act as a breakout point.

Oh yeah, I was going to upload that part too but must have forgotten to do it. I will do it now since I have nothing to do this afternoon.

For those who have not seen the episode.

The reason for the high voltage segment of the episode was that they were trying to create a fulgurite/Lichtenberg figure from a direct lighting strike. To attract the strike they launched rockets with earthing wires attached to try and make the lightning travel down the wire and create a fulgurite at the bottom.

Unfortunately they were not able to capture any strikes despite many attempts. Personally I don't think the rockets were going high enough to encourage a strike. A few km between clouds and the earth, so the 100m or so the rockets were reaching wasn't doing much to encourage an arc to form if there wasn't much strikes happening to begin with (In the UK lighting is somewhat of a rare occurrence).

By the way Steve when was it they filmed your demonstration? I am guessing around late summer last year?

It was sometime around June last year. The Man Lab set is in a warehouse in Brentford.

We also tried to make James's hair stand on end by charging him up with a Van de Graaff, but that didn't work too well and got cut.
