I have racing arcs along the secondary and flashovers between the primary and the secondary. I removed one turn from the primary because I thought it was the wrong frequency, and I did put a tube filled with paraffin around the secondary, but it did not help much. What can I do next? Please help!

For a SGTC, the coupling between primary and secondary coil seems to be too high.

Yes, I would make the primary conical, so it doesn't couple to the secondary just along a small length.

I agree.
Too much coupling for a SGTC. Try changing your primary to a pancake style primary. You can use just regular 12 AWG wire to get the number of turns and tuning and then replacing with some thicker conductor once all the tuning is done.

Thanks!!! I lowered the primary to the bottom of the secondary, and I removed one more turn. Now it is perfect!

That will do the trick. Glad it worked out for you.

what kind of capacitor are you using? make your primary about 6" with 8 turns with #8 or small refrigerator tubing or wire. a pancake winding might be easier to make.

I use 25 foil caps from 100 nF 1500V in series. The primary is now 5 turns copperwire 1.5 mm plastic isolated. Trafo is 10 kV 20 mA.
I get strikes from about 5 inch and more! Very happy!

I like the look of your tank circuit.

I typically maintain at least one inch clearance between the innermost primary turn and the secondary. I also extensively model with JavaTC before even spending a single cent. JavaTC conveniently suggests a minimal separation. Your favorite modelling program probably does the same.

Air, though it does break down, does not track. Adding the wax may increase the risk of tracking.

Thank you! I use teslascript/teslaform. I use very often wax, because it is such a good isolator, it can be removed, and it gave strength to the construction. Since I retuned the coil and lowered the primary, I had no down-streamers any more.
