Hey - that looks really cool. Congrats. I just built Phillip's MIDI controller too - pretty solid.
I use the house ground wire on the 120v input power cable, that's connected to the strike ring and base of the secondary. Then any strike objects are connected directly to the base of the coil. Have been told that this is the best way to go, especially to prevent stray current running through the house wiring trying to find a way back to the coil. I run indoors too and don't have any negative effects (except for occasional laptop interference close t the coil.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vExalPzhoOA&feature=youtu.be

Huh. I come from spark gap land, in which (as far as I could tell) the forbidden mistake is grounding to mains. It seems to work well for people though. Nice coil!

Right now OCD is set at 400 amps.

Does anybody know how hard you can push these CM300dy-12H bricks?

Hi. Your coil looks fantastic! The toroid really gives it that extra razzle dazzle!
Although this doesn't directly answer your question about the cm300 current, but you might find this interesting Link2 so you know how hard NOT to push them wink

Edit: realized that thread is for the cm300dy-24h, either way it might help

A picture is worth... well, words are a bit boring really.

Thanks everybody here for the wisdom, guidance, and encouragement. I've learned more in this project than in any other I've attempted, and have been continually inspired by all of you. Is it over? NO WAY. But it is running, and that's thanks to 4HV!

240v on the bridge running 600Apk. Seeing a lot of that OCD light shades

Job well done, sir! You have excellent craftsmanship and have definitely succeeded in building a showpiece coil! I bet you could push another foot of spark out with some fine tuning. I hope you show us some current waveforms too! Keep up the good work.

Thanks!

Update time. Been sticking together a new power supply, capable of 400 volts at 10 amps on my 30 amp garage outlet. Just a beefy doubler so I don't have to worry about carrying around ANOTHER transformer. Isn't the DRSSTC mentality to leave the iron behind?

And with 350-400 volts on the bridge, I'm able to hit 800 amps. Now look what it will do! 55" ceiling strike!

Using my new spark glove:

I suppose I'll just be tuning and poking around the limits of reliable operation for awhile.

Got a job now, so the next hurdle is building coil #1 a twin!
