Dr. Slack, the magic number is simply 4 times 1.11, the form factor (RMS-to-average ratio) of a sine wave. smile It comes about because the "v" in the equation is RMS, but the flux density depends on the time integral of the voltage, which is a kind of average.

For square wave drive, the factor is just 4.

So, as an exercise, take the primary voltage as sin(wt) where w=2pi * 50 or 60 Hz. Integrate this to a -k.cos(wt) flux variation in the core. Work out the constants of proportionality (use SI throughout), and see if you can derive the 4.44fN formula. Let me know how many nasty constants got swept up in the 4.44 when you're done.
I wasn't any good with sin/phases etc, but is it rms,peak to peak,1.17, If I take away the 4.44, it match's up. I'm guessing why my transformers aren't following the formula is bad design(large air gap).
