Personally, I recommend a legitimate grounding rod, though it is slightly overkill. Getting 5 feet deep in the ground is just that much more security. As well, I used a bit gauge 12 (I think) wire along with a nice clamp sort of thing.
As far as getting it into the ground: It's like Physics Junkie said. Use a ton of elbow grease to shove it down far, but you'll hit some hard bits pretty quickly. I've used things from big rocks to hammers to sledgehammers. That makes sure that grounding isn't an issue.
