Thanks for sharing - that is a thing of beauty. Never gets old smile

i saw a few strikes to your primary - do you have a guard rail of some sort?

Thank you!

Over the past few weeks I've been trying to modifying things here and there, such as topload, secondary, primary and capacitor to get the performance where I wanted it to be. Now that it's done, I do plan to really add a few more features to make the coil complete.

While there haven't been any problems with primary strikes so far, I do plan to add a guard rail around the primary - thanks for the suggestion! Also, notice that my in-built 16V Power supply is sitting right at the bottom of the coil. It did get hit once with no problems, but I've since stuck a grounded copper strip on it. I plan to simply use a nice short length of copper tubing for the ground strike ring.

Here's another photograph of the coil in action.

Nice pictures. I really like the way it tracks across the floor.
I also have one of their early boards. Like you I had to increase tank cap to get good results.
With the .068 cap it seemed to eat igbits.

Glad to know that you too got a coil working! Do you have any pictures of it in action? Actually there was nothing wrong with the original cap. I know it has spectacular performance when the rest of the coil is tuned correctly, so I believe it's more of a matter of making sure that the frequencies are close.

It was an oversight of my part that I wound a secondary which had a bit higer inductance and thus lower resonant frequency, without checking my calculations. Using the same 6 turn primary, a different secondary (say 10 inches with about 1600 turns or so) should keep the coil happy with fres at ~270khz vs the 220k I'm running at now. Right now, the 60n65s stay happy with about a two minute song played on midi with about 100us on-times.

My coil is still way out of tune judging by the fact I can only get about 10 inch strikes to ground.
How far is your toroid from the top secondary winding?
I think mine needs to be closer.
Im also having to use .21 Mf tank cap
I think I will reduce primary winding by one round and retry with .068 cap.

The centre of my toroid is just about half an inch from the top of my secondary winding (which is 10.25" in total length). What are the specifications of your coil? You should try using Java TC to see if your primary and secondary are roughly in resonance. This will probably save you a lot of guess work! :)

Also, I've made an updated video of the coil in action from more angles. Enjoy!
