For the most part SiC doesn't make new applications possible, it just removes complexity in existing applications. The fact that they could be made relatively cheaply in volume is irrelevant. As long as there is no mass market use for them where they are cheap enough to compete with silicon they will remain boutique items.
Patents of course don't help.
