Magnetoresistance?! Seriously? I always thought that it was far too slow to be used in this way, however many thousands of GMR elements on a little slab of silicon might be a lot faster and better isolated than a conventional IGBT or MOSFET.

I was under the impression that new generation hard drives used it because of low power and high speed?

They should rather focus on the SiC transistors, AFAIK there are still just the same FETs by CREE and they are still just as expensive. I know there are SiC BJTs but not in general production. It would be quite interesting I think to have an IGBT with nanosecond switching speeds...

It has already been over a year, and the prices are still just as extreme. I think when those FETs would enter the market, the standard parts would soon become obsolete and all those big companies don't want that to happen, so they probably do all they can to keep SiC away from common availability and price.
