Hi all.

I am aware that 4HV does have rules about this, *but*..

Has anyone else other than me noticed that sometimes after experimenting with high voltage, strange things sometimes happen?
Recently was doing lightbulb in microwave experiment, and turned it off just before the bulb exploded.
Went to check something else about an hour later, and noticed that my plugged in laptop which was sitting on standby in another room had completely shut down, to the point that even the power light was off.
Checked, power was getting to it because the orange light was on but it wasn't responding to the power switch. (&"!*$!$ !!!

Took the battery out, tried the power switch again and nothing frown
In the end, the only way to make it work again was to leave the battery out for an hour (!) and press the power switch a half dozen times to reset the memory.
Upon replacing the battery and reinstalling mains power it started up fine although the OS data was corrupted somewhat.

Said machine has been working fine ever since, had an issue with the OS getting mangulated but that was my own stupid fault for plugging in an external HDD loaded with viruses.

Even more strange, my Sharp TV has taken to blinking its power light at the same time each night (12.48 am) then stopping.
It happened at 11 as well a few days ago.

Feel free to add your unexplained electromagnetic effect here.

I recall reading about a guy in the UK whose neighbours got so fed up with their stuff misbehaving that they called the Police to confiscate his equipment...

EDIT:- Could be related to the UEFI issue, perhaps it was only a partial brick?!

We once had an old electric fire that could pick up amateur radio signals and would 'talk' to us. Gave me quite the surprise, as you can imagine.

I once lived in an old flat with 'dodgy' wiring. I also had an old fridge which presumably had a faulty starter capacitor, or something. All kinds of things would happen when the thermostat switched the motor on and off, due to voltage spikes or whatever getting back into the domestic wiring. It took me ages to work out it was due to the fridge.

In matters such as this I agree with Arthur C. Clarke, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Things may seem to get weird, that's just because we only understand a fraction of our physical world. Someday, maybe we will unlock it's secrets and transcend to beings of pure energy, or destroy the universe.

Only in the UK! angry

After making my first "tesla coil" I have had some weird things happening with my television (in quotes as it was really just a large step up transformer with me pulsing the primary with a bug zapper + capacitor).

The TV was on in the background and I was pulsing this "tesla coils" primary coil, getting excited over some 2 and a half inch sparks from the secondary side. As I did this, within seconds the TV just locked up with a *LOUD* 50hz buzzing sound coming out of the speakers. Pressing the power button did nothing and the only thing I could do was pull the plug.

Upon turning it back on it was seemingly fine, but it doesn't end there. Now occasionally when I turn it on I just get a VERY LOUD static sound from the speakers and static on the screen. Turning it off and on again fixes it.

A couple of times this has happened late at night, normally when I can't sleep and decide to turn the TV for a bit only to be greeted by that loud static sound and angry family members who have just been awaken by the racket. cheesey

Heh...
Sounds like damage to the microcontroller, these are notoriously delicate and I've seen similar problems on TVs subjected to power surges.

One of my friends has had a PC which got lightning damaged, everything works apart from all the USB ports are dead and the onboard network is also fried to a crisp.
Won't even work with a PCI network card..

I have a relative whom I see often. He majors in Religion with emphasis on Mind & Spirituality at U of M. Before that he lived in Ashrams and in a monastery in China for a short while. Very into yogic meditation and whatnot. After U of M he will be "giving up" his life to become a monk. Point is, he is a VERY spiritual person, very intuitive, bright.. the type of person you just get good vibes from being around. So a while back when I had built my first mini tesla coil, he was interested in seeing how it worked so I showed him. When I turned it on he instantly stepped and asked me to turn it off immediately! I was thinking wtf?? I asked him whats wrong and he says "can't you feel that?!".
I said "feel what?!".
He says "That energy is very strong".
I said "well is it like bad energy like is it negative?" (I asked because his reaction and the look on his face was like he was uncomfortable)
He said "Yes, very. Hazy, cloudy, and dark". I was thinking ummmm okayyyyyy... anyhow, I thought this was quite interesting. He is on a TOTALLY different level than anyone I've ever met though so I will never see his perspective but for somebody who spends all his free time meditating and learning how to focus the body's energy and whatever else he does.. it hardly surprised me. I didnt ask him because it was kind of awkward, but it seemed to me like he could 'feel' the electric/magnetic field or something, i dont know lol.. quite interesting experience though

I remember when i was first playing with high voltage. with some double transistor driver. the more i draw a arc. The brighter my room gets. I think it's releated to my cfls.

Also i remember that running a mini tesla coil near my mum's microwave would make the microwave turn on by its self lol.

As it happens, my MW decided to do that the other day.
Closed the door, went to do some cooking and the buttons had entered 10.00 by themselves. WTH.. ?!
I wonder how many fires have been caused this way..

Considering the amount of experiments you do near and in your microwave oven, I am surprised it still works ;)
