Hi all.
In view of the recent news re. 2nd amendment and the imminent reclassification of some devices such as 3D printers as "terrorist tools", what are we going to do if the Feds come after anything that can generate a high voltage?

I am not sure if it will ever come to this but the question has to be asked.

Maybe changing a few names such as "coilg*ns" to "electromagnetic acceleration device" could help, at least to keep those less honourable from messing up our hard work.

Technically many things are likely already illegal in many areas as there are countless bylaws inherited over the centuries. However, enforcement will be very difficult given a website can't really disappear like a burned-book in "Fahrenheit 451".

Science & Art has always been in an unfavorable position of pointing out the irrational behavior of political power structures in history. Due process and free speech were the only protection against persecution under published popular opinion.

The death of Mr. Swartz has proven even ambiguous "fair use" became 14 counts of a Federal crime in modern America.

Many people forget that a Social Contract is sometimes explicitly written down as law:

Note, the DMCA would have fined Nero for public performance of a cover song:

The sheer paranoid delusion and unbalance hysteria coming from some of the people in this nation is downright scary. rolleyes

Paranoia knows no bounds!

Scary to say the least and a serious impairment of the forum's SNR.

im not a "birther" or a "foil hatter", but its clear to me that Nazi Pelosi is a clear and present danger to the freedom and security of all Americans. And the "economic psychosis" exhibited in California, is a credible danger to the remaining 49 states.

"On the Effectiveness of Aluminium Foil Helmets: An Empirical Study" ( Link2 )
This paper suggests the colloquialism is quite irrational in its own regard.
@Scott Fusare: Hats off to you for citing it first, and yes it is still funny years later... wink

@Dr. Spark:
Note in Blue Hill, Nebraska bylaw:
'No female wearing a "hat which would scare a timid person" can be seen eating onions in public.'

In most countries it is illegal to encourage someone to commit a crime, and is known as inchoate offenses. Thus, you would be a Criminal if someone on this forum was caught eating an onion while wearing a scary tinfoil hat. You would be arrested, extradited, and if its your third strike remain in jail a rather long time.

Correction:
Mr. Swartz was only charged with 13 Federal crimes, and faced over 35 years in prison.

In more positive news:
The TSA has terminated its contract with Rapiscan... So its back to getting groped by some perv guard with latex gloves.

On the subject of "backups", how would we go about archiving the whole of 4HV including all archived posts, etc to disk for "historical research purposes" ?

I can see something like this being useful if t'internet ever breaks (cough solar flare /cough)

From my experience so far with individuals from various federal agencies, I think legitimate hobbyists won't have too much to worry about (with the exception of things like Chemistry, which are regulated by more than drug and terrorism related agencies now, such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission regulating chemicals for "illegal fireworks")

A project I've actually been trying to restart is a Random Number Generator based off of radioactive decay, for which I've used Uranium. I've discussed this with my Professors, who in turn while waiting for my arrival at a presentation decided to mention to the presenters that I had built the first prototype while in Middle School.
The presenters were there from the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service, doing a talk about national security and cyberspace.
Their question for me? Not "how did you get a hold of Uranium metal?", nor assertions that I was a terrorist.
Rather, I was simply asked "How do you still have hair?" (true story!)

Those who have a legitimate interest and are reasonably open seem to be in the clear for the most part.
However, there are some paranoid officials as well. I seem to recall that a middle school science project had the bomb squad called. While I could understand a teacher being overly cautious, the bomb squad said there was nothing wrong with it, yet the student was sent to "counseling."

I think cases such as this will be in the minority, and really any hobby can spark a panic given the right paranoid person.

All of this said, I have been wrong before. But personally I'm not too worried. If they think a firearm can be manufactured with a 3D printer, they'll probably restrict barrels along with lower receivers rather than ban the printers themselves (as a 3D printed barrel would not be strong enough made with a hobby printer).
