Cost me nothing. Welcome to the wonderful world of samples!
If you only want a little bit of something it never hurts to ask for a small sample. Many companies will give free, some will charge shipping, some will charge for everything, some will simply say no.
Many companies regard giving out samples as the ultimate in targeted advertising - the goodwill alone is highly worthwhile.
Case in point: here you are looking for IR detector pigment, and here's me remembering a sample that has been sitting in my drawer for several years, and telling you about the company I got it from!

Look at a (very) cheap usb webcam off ebay. The cheaper the better because the silicon ccd will most likely not have an IR filter in front. Mine can detect the 1.06um wavelenght of yag. I get a strong signal with 900 and 800nm led and laser sources and TV remotes. I have one of these IR detection cards that you recharge with UV (from the fluorescent lights in the room). It was made by Kodak. OK to detect a beam but not that good to line the laser as the visible emission will decay rapidely. You have to keep moving the card and recharge. very low sensitivity compared to the ccd.
