I experimented with The Trimmer engine alternator and couldn't even light a 55W head light ha-ha it stunk but mount the alternator on an 8 HP snow blower engine you can weld with it. I like the single motor/engine variable pitch Idea although I think it would not improve efficiency over four smaller electric motors because it will take the same amount of energy for lift but the gas ICE driving four variable rotors sounds promising for longer flight. I cant seem to think of an ICE generator and four motors being light enough for lift and also a generator may not produce enough power for 100A worth of motors being small enough to fit on board that being said I don't know if it would ever work unless you still use batteries the generator would add some flight time.
P.S I am designing a few different Crafts with Solidworks I will Post them In a few days but I plan on them being full models so it will take time. I will have Realistic Renderings.

Still working on it its becoming quite a complicated assembly. I was thinking of adding some Ultra sonic range finders to prevent some crashes but learning the whole programming thing is the next tough thing to do.

IR distance sensors are about the same cost, and way less prone to drifting and falsification of distance. especially for downward looking.
you and i both need lidar as well...your machine will be too expensive to risk, and not have at least some safety features for its own survival (like emergency vertical decent control).

Yea i did some research that is High tech expensive I am sure but this is an on going project it will be Expensive any ways Is this I.R sensor good enough for a fast reaction I only need them for blade/object collisions This thing is going to have allot of electronics on board and i don't want to strike any thing as far as Lidar goes I will have to do some more thinking

yes the sharp family are the ones i meant, but that one is no good, 10cm is 5inches, you need 10 inches min out to 30 or 50 inches range. to preevnt collisions. EDIT: youll need some high quality ESC's, Id recommend Castle Creations Phoenix ones, they are known to have good head speed, and throttle/rpm spool up features... i can testify to their survive-ablity and ease of program-ability.
(i normally don't recommend Castle ESC's for multi-rotors, but your a special case. So for all the others Im advising on the forum, remember this thread is a special case, since the author is using collective lift control)
youll probly want to use the Multi Wii flight controller.

Thank you for the useful ideas I can not wait see the first lift off I will use the better sensors and check out the Better ESC's I like Multi Wii but I am also thinking of Arduino for Sensors And some nice Flight LED control.
