Yep, arcing between the two windings. is polyurethane coating will reduce/remove the arcing?
I doubt.Unless it is veeery thick smile
I think two windings are too close or you have tunning issue or really too large bang energy.

My coil coupling configuration on JAVATC is only 0.169 or 0.17 only..but arcing..
Why 0.19 of other coilers isn't? what am i missing here? smile please help frown

Hi zzz_julian_zzz,

Your secondary has a large inductance (i.e. large diameter, thin wire) so it will probably produce a large voltage in the secondary not very much above its base. That increases its tendency to arc over. From my limited experience I don't think you need so much coupling. Coupling is nice to have because it decreases the effect of detuning due to arc loading. In your case of a high inductance secondary, detuning effects should not be so strong, since the low secondary Q will lower detuning effects. My coil seems to run ok with k=0.14.

A side effect of lower coupling is a lower efficiency of the coil. To compensate for that, you need either a higher primary current or more primary turns. It depends on your electronics, which is more advisable. More primary turns will lead to a slower rampup, i.e. longer burst times are required and also higher voltage ratings of your primary cap. Can you supply some info on your bridge?

Usually DRSSTCs are run at about 100 BPS. Arc lengths increase with BPS. Beyond 100 BPS, the growth of arcs is little, though, and not much of an advantage due to the high increase of power consumption.

My bridge is configured as a FULL bridge of 2 CM300s. supplied by 310VDC, MMC are 6x4 or 0.15 / 1.6kv MKP total of 225nf/6400vdc

I have almost 10 ohms (high impedance) primary LC circuit and my burst are designed to max of 180us due to slow ramp up.
I don't get the thing about the high inductance secondary. Because this design are almost the standard Wire thick - coil diameter ratio. Low coupling makes for wimpy sparks (i mean for 2x the length of sec winding, i am targeting 3x or more) I am targeting up to .18 coefficient.. I hope making the polyurethane thick will solve my problem.

Also another thing, if sparks are coming every on my top load, is this reducing the max point to point length of an arc??? I can see 2 ft coming from one side and 1 feet or more on the other sides.

Thank you Upspring!

A comparable design might be Goodchilds DRSSTC-2 which has a frequency of 120 kHz. I believe it has a smaller inductance than yours. He uses a flat primary, which makes arc overs less likely.

I believe your coil is out of tune. The power your bridge can deliver should easily be sufficient fo 5' arcs. Possibly your primary freq is too low, as Conner suggested.

You should use a breakout wire.

I have a breakout wire, but my toroid (as in pic above) is not that smooth.. and more likely to produce arcs everywhere...
in javatc, my primary is tuned 20% lower than of the sec fres..
