Any suggestions?
Maybe you could experiment with air core transformers? Then perhaps use the HF output to power some gas discharge tubes (like the gas filled bulbs in the thread on the Tesla coil forum)?
Why do you wind a coil if you don't know what to use it for?
Sometimes when I have a few days to myself I get bored easily and usually end up tinkering with random stuff in the shed, so I get what he means.

Well, a Tesla coil is obvious. I also used a non-resonant air core transformer to drive a large plasma globe light bulb. The transformer was driven under resonance with a vacuum tube.

You have wound a coil typical of an RF choke in a vacuum tube transmitter.
~~60 uHy with a Q of ~~60 at 4mHz
Since you are at school, hook it up to the most sensitive galvanometer you have access to, and drop metallic things through it, both ferrous and non, and develop a signature analysis relating the disturbance in the inductance caused when the object is slowed as it drops through.

Hey, one day I was bored and got a 10 pound spool of 34awg wire from school (teachers permission) and wound 3 coils 3.5 x 12.5
They sat in my room for a little over a year and now I'm using one for a small DRSSTC. Felt nice to go "I want to build a small drsstc" grab a coil, go. :)

Well since I have to wait for parts to ship anyway, I quickly built a Slayer Exciter circuit on my bread board. I used a 5 turn primary and drove it at 16v, the light bulb is a 13w CFL. I'm impressed with the results, especially since there is not a top load.
I would never wind a coil just because I'm bored. I'm on my fourth attempt at a secondary, and that too, is a little improvement from the last, but still crappy. I really need to buy from trusted buyers, lol...
