Ordinary magnifier configuration. Consider situation when sparks from the top of extra coil strike "transmission line" . Question : How can air gap ,between secondary and primary coil, withstand involved HV spikes?

The situation isn't rare during magnifier runs but I don't remember anyone has ever reported observing problem of this kind.

Yes,I agree. But in the case described above that extra distance (the gap between top of primary and top of secondary) remains unbroken by spark.And that's the puzzle :)

I would say it depends on the voltages and capacitances... If the secondary topload+transmission line have a relatively high capacitance, the voltage pulse would not be so high.

Well,who knows.But I doubt.Never heard/read someone complaining regarding the problem. Problem of isolation ( breakdown ) between primary and secondary is reportedly present only during the phase of energy transfer from primary to HV circuit(s).Strange that these voltages are higher than these caused by a long spark direct strike. Tertiary toploads can be comparatively very big :

I guess HV spikes are much smaller than expected due to other reasons. For example,consider spark from a big DRSSTC striking a smaller coil (5-6x smaller) , or striking just small electrode on short insulator support :
