The fact is there are crazy/extreme people, religion or not. and there are f***ed up people, too. I'm not saying I'm sane, but sometimes, i just want to say WTF is wrong with this whole freaking world.
However, this may also be a way of balancing.
What if we stop killing each other, what if we find cures for all know diseases.
seriously, what if people stop dying?

An interesting opinion for you, I quote:

wrote ...
Dear Editor:

If termites are weakening a home's foundation, what do we do? We call
the exterminator and eliminate the problem. If armed robbers are at
our doors trying to break their way in, what do we do? We defend
ourselves to the best of our abilities until the authorities arrive to
eliminate the threat.

If Islamic totalitarians come close to murdering hundreds of people by
mixing common household materials to blow up airplanes, what do we
do? Apparently, we stop carrying liquids and gels in our carry-on
luggage.

What should we do? We should insist that our government eliminate
the real source of the problem decisively and quickly. Islamic
totalitarian groups such as Hezbollah and Al Qaeda, and the countries
supporting them such as Iran and Syria, are hell-bent on attacking
Americans. They will not stop unless we make it impossible for them to
function or regroup. Their infrastructure and support networks
have to be permanently disabled as quickly as possible in whatever way
our military recommends. A drawn-out, five-year "War on Terror"
where we help build roads, plants and hospitals in the Middle East
only strengthens the resolve of our enemies.

And they'll keep trying to blow up planes in the meantime.

What bugs me about that kind of opinion is that it assumes that the holder of it is right, and that people who see the world differently are a "problem" to be "eliminated." I'm sure the totalitarian groups and their supporters mentioned in that quote are writing exactly the same thing about us right now, with "Christian" in place of "Islamic" and "Israel" in place of "Hezbollah".

So we have two sides both claiming that they are the "homeowners" and the other guys are the "termites". But there's only one truth, so how can that be? Of course, the side that is really "right" is the one with the best propaganda and war machines. Us! smile

A more compassionate view would be that everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of reality, and the best thing to do is to try and avoid conflict between groups whose interpretations aren't compatible. In practice I think that would mean developing technologies to replace oil, and getting the hell out of the Middle East and leaving the Arabs to kill each other in horrible ways, since they seem to like doing that so much. Or if we still feel the need to "democratize" the Middle East (by which we just mean "Make the Arabs behave in ways that seem acceptable to Westerners") we could just say we won't buy any more oil from their "corrupt regimes" wink

In some people's reality they can ignore this problem and it goes away. Well I have news for you, this is not going away, but it is getting worse. So believe what you like. I know what has to be done. These people must be stopped in my backyard, your backyard, and in there own backyard. This is pure hate in action.

Another reason they hate us is because of our support of Israel, their sworn enemies...Those Middle Eastern Radicals (MERs) have sworn to kill all Jews. Now if thats not genocide, I dont know what is. I knew some kids from the PLO(Palestianian Liberation Organization) who explained to me how their mission is to not only move the Jews, but to EXTERMINATE them. Their relatives/friends, all have murdered Jews over there. They think its perfectly fine! (gods work!)

Its an idea we are fighting, more will pop up and take the place of those we eliminate...

I don't think it's a matter of Left/Right when it comes to the media, EVR-- even NY Times has been accused of pandering too much to the right, by those with more leftist leanings than yours. From what I can gather, it's more business than politics-- the news that sells is the most sensational kind. So if "Muslims Are Out To Get Us!" makes for better reading than "A Small Minority of Fundimentalist Islam Is Out To Get Us!" and sells more news papers, which are they going to pick? It's not about left wing or right wing editors-- it's about companies trying to sell newspapers. Or that's how I've come to see it, anyway.
I don't think _all_ Palistinians have killed Jews; that's the same rhetoric that has all Muslims hating the west. I've talked to a couple who weren't that bad--racist and angry, yes; murderous, no.
As for the new flight restrictions... really doesn't bother me much. I've never had the cash to fly commercial, anyway.

My mother and father just flew home to San Diego out of Boston. They missed all this mess by one day, for which I am grateful. They had all sorts of liquids with them, including some real Maine blueberry jam and a few quarts of wild blueberries. It would have been very very sad to have to chuck those out at the security checkpoint.

All these new restrictions do seem silly to me, but everyone should note that except for the liquids/gels rule, the new restrictions are for flights leaving from the UK. mattrg's girlfriend shouldn't be forced to check her laptop. It does seem though like the eventual destination of all this is to eliminate carry-on baggage completely. Funny how that pretty much leaves you at the mercy of the airline for food/water/entertainment for the duration of your flight.

And folks, let's lay off the arguing. Maybe we could use this opportunity to set an example by respecting one another, and getting along, even if we all come from different backgrounds, and disagree on religious and political grounds.
