I thought there might be one more better thread were i categorized all the oils, but our search function sucks.

Have you tried Steve's '4HV search engine' here: Link2

i have 40L of oil from a 100kV carl zeiss electron microscope steppup tranny, its yours if you want it but it is in melbourne, aus. it enveloped these two darlings in twenty litre scintered copper drums, finished internally with about 10mm of a resin, polyester i guess.
oh hello everyone, this is my first post, i am technically incompetent on almost every subject discussed on this forum, but i have registered to learn. i'm a chemist, however i seem to have collected lots of hv gear over the years and want to play with it.
Also i'm pretty sure i spelt scintered incorrectly.

No, it works for searching the whole forum. Just put in search terms, names of posters, etc.

so it does work well, at learst it allows search terms of 3 or less letters, oil and such are normally dis-allowed.

anyway, canola oil works well and is cheap, on 1 gallon plus apps.... corn oil is terrible dont use it, if you have a special signal cap or some other dielectric influced device, then yellow virgin olive oil is best, not the green kind though. Olive is most expensive, but changes least over time.

motor oil, mineral oil and silicone shock oil are all acceptable.
