Now that I look at it, I see how it works. The whole "isolation transformer" thing makes sense now.

Sorry about all the noob confusion. I've never had any real electronics education, I'm just learning all of this as I go along.

Yup, thats basically it.
Nothing wrong with being a noob - we all start out that way. The more you read / ask the better you will get. I've been doing this stuff for over 35 years both hobby and professional - and I'm still learning new things!
