if you REALLY wanted more current, you could rewind the MOT's primary to about 20 volts with the thickest wire you can find, and use those in parallel to get like 400 amps... search instructables for "spot welder"

Benguy, please don't post pictures of yourself pretending to drink your chemicals, it's not very responsible.

whats wrong with drinking my H2O? lol it keeps me alive

JK JK, I'll keeps the pics to myself

And what about any residue from other experiment?

Wow, after sitting idly for nearly a year, this thread has been resurrected. Cool.

Since I wasn't a member when this thread started, I'll add my 2 cents. I have a 1200W MOT that I rewound to almost exactly 20 VDC after being rectified and smoothed (10 turns of 6 AWG). This was for my ZVS driver, but I couldn't resist trying some electrolysis stuff with it. So yes, basic math says it should be able to output around 60A (probably with substantial voltage drop).

But a simple electrolysis cell with 2 rod electrodes has WAY too much resistance to allow that much current. To get 10s of amps flowing you need to have large plate electrodes, and lots of them, very close together.

another (slightly less risky) method is to parallel lots of MC34063 SMPS converters to generate your 4V at 10A or so (IIRC each one is good for 1.5A and up to 2A pulsed)

I once built a charger this way, you do need to calibrate the output voltages and combine using diodes, but it does work well.

I've just been using a big 'ol SLAB for all my electrolysis experiments so far, although I am looking to make a larger electrolysis machine for making hydrochloric acid, as my parents arn't very fond of buying the stuff. cheesey

Then they'll have to start locking up the salt... angry

The less expensive method would be adding 10 windings on a 300W toroidal transformer, obtaining a couple of volts, then taking care to reduce all the overpotentials and ohmic losses.

How were you planning to get HCl from electrolysis? Were you going to build a simple HCl furnace of some sort that is fed from the cell? Hydrogen and chlorine do not combine without initiation. Keep in mind that even a graphite electrode will be slowly corroded, being removed as liquid and/or gaseous CCl4 and/or CO2. Most metals will be hopelessly attacked to the point that you will not get much free chlorine out.

Hmm that could be a problem, my idea was to combine hydrogen and chlorine byproduct gases and set tiny amounts on fire to produce hydrogen chloride. Then I'd dissolve the HCl in distilled water to get Hydrochloric Acid.

Sounds like a massive dangerous ordeal that will likely have a very small yield. A gallon of 9M HCl is about $8-10 at Lowes or Home Depot. Maybe your parents won't have a problem with you buying it if they never find out? wink Just an idea . . .
