Some dont even check at all. My local industrial supply house, which is surplus, they have a sign bat says all items are not tested. You sign a paper when you buy stuff that basically states you understand your purchase is a risk, and agree that no matter what, you cannot return the item. They have a few igbts but they do not touch them with anything but their hands. No testing...if you want to walk in there with a meter and some toy to test it, feel free. Lol

Hehe, thanks guys, do you think it would be better to go with a smaller DRSSTC first so i can get grips with it? im working with someone else, the deal is i do the designing and work out what we need + price and he pays for the lot, problem is he only understands sparks and lightning... you know who you are =3

Thomas~~

Did you take a look at the 1Tesla DRSSTC board kit that is in the PROJECTS section? This is a very nice design and low cost. I would recommend that design for a first DRSSTC. Inexpensive and from what i hear works great!

I would suggest just jumping right in and building one. Your first DRSSTC will always have problems and things you should have done differently, but this is the best way to learn!

I would start with 60N60s easy to work with and sorta hard to blow up, and Steve wards's UD1.3b. If you do that you can kinda make the resonator however you want if you keep the Fres <200KHz or so.

you could try batchpcb or futurlec, they could have one of those boards made for under 40. futurlec takes any pcb file known to man, but batch takes only gerber files.

If you don't mind going half bridge I might be able to send you a few used (working) 30n60's for next to nothing. They were given to me for my first DRSSTC so passing them on to a beginner seems like the best way to go. PM me if you are interested.

Also, I agree with Goodchild's comments about jumping right in. One thing that I have learned is that with every coil you build you have those "wish i had done it different" moments. Best way to learn is to learn from your own mistakes. That being said, good luck!

BTW, I have not tried them myself, but have always been told that there are generally heating issues with the TO220 case IGBT's when used in anything other than small coils. Just something to look into before you begin building.
