ok, im working on my SSTC at the moment, but for my next project im thinking of making a DRSSTC, which IGBTs should i go with: -4x IXGN60N60 or -2x CM300DY-24H

cm300 is a bit over kill for a medium sized DRSSTC.......60N60 will be ok...imho btw.....you need to use a phase compensation driver especially with the cm300 bricks more so than the 60N60's

If you look at my DRSSTC I, it uses 60N60 and is what I would call a medium coil, maybe rangeing into a lesser large :)
1.5 meter sparks but not enough for that size coil and I run them at 500A which is their upper limit. I got CM300s to upgrade it with when I get time.
I want to upgrade since there is very little headroom left with the 60N60, running longer ontimes and very high BPS is just not a desirable road to go down.

Yup...Will say im running a fullbridge of CM300DY-12NF, Ive been told to keep em around 100khz. I run them at 48.9khz. They are rather slow, as others have stated. Just being another witness :D

Hmm, if i went with these, how much more money would a rig like this lightly cost? im planning to get the IGBTs from EVR Used/Surplus because they are only $99 each
Im thinking of following somthing like Goodchilds design for the DRSSTC, i really want to know, where can i get a board made of that quality for my driver? will steves latest driver work for this coil, im relitivly unfamilier with DRSSTCs, how much tuning will i haveto do likely, is there lots of things to modify? or is more or less plug and play once youve tested each part works?

My first DRSSTC cost me something like 400$ maybe, plus minus...
But if you are willing to pay 99$ for each IGBT if will get a lot more expensive, I found surplus CM300s in Europe at about half that price.
I have always used Wards drivers and got nothing but good to say, Goodchilds is a deviation of that and both (can) incorporate Finn Hammers prediktor.
DRSSTCs are a huge step up in complexity from SSTCs, you will have to know what you are doing or learn it doing building and testing. Failure modes and faults is about 10 fold.
Nothing is really plug and play about Tesla coils as a whole and DRSSTCs is rather picky on tuning point, its within a few centimeters on the primary coil to find the sweet spot.
Go for the challenge, learn something new, build a magnificent Tesla coil and prepare to spend some hours, tears and cash :)

Yes, you can purchase surplus bricks from a variety of sources, however, you are taking a gamble whether or not they work as most surplus supplies do not test their IGBT bricks other than a ohmmeter test. The surplus bricks we sell are all tested under load with both DC and pulsed waveforms to ensure they meet the specifications indicated within the manufacturers datasheet.
But that said, many have had great success with their coils going through the standard surplus market. With us, you are merely paying more not for the device, but for an extra level of screening.
