I was trying to work out what the circuit is to wirelessly drive a CFL.
Why would you use that over a LED?

Because they're cheap.

Interesting! Looks like he combined Uzzors' levitation circuit and Marko's wireless power circuit. Both long time 4hv members.

I want a row of these things lighting my office desk this winter. smile

The electromagnet could have an AC ripple current superimposed on the DC one, to levitate and transfer power at the same time. smile

You will need a very high voltage to put significant HF energy through that kind of inductance ...

PS. with 3.5 kg of copper in that thing worrying about the price of the LED seems unnecessary.

I like the idea given earlier in the thread, that neo magnets could be used to generate most of the force with the electromagnet for fine adjustment. Seems like that would make for a more compact assembly with less power dissipation. If you did it that way, you might want to drive the magnet coil with a H-bridge so it could work in either polarity.

You could maybe even find a levitation height where the magnet current was zero, in which case the electromagnet would just be providing dynamic stabilisation. Or maybe it would be best to aim for an operating point with the electromagnet bucking the permanent magnet slightly. Hopefully that would cause the lamp to fly upwards and stick to the magnet in the event of a power failure, then drop back down when power was restored.

But of course then we get into a debate about the price of neodymium. smile

"...then drop back down when power was restored"
The problem with strong magnets is that when they stick, the force needed to separate them again is remarkable. tongue

It would probably be best to just use a speaker magnet for the top one.

BTW, are there any free programs to calculate the force between two magnets? There are plenty of calculators online for identical ones, but not for say one Ceramic ring magnet and one rare earth disc magnet.

I believe FEMM can calculate force in any configuration of magnets. One of the examples in the FEMM wiki is a coilgun.

The sticking issue could be mitigated by putting a non-magnetic buffer between the pole piece and the lamp. The force falls off rapidly with distance at short distances.

However that would eat into the levitation distance and make it look less impressive.
