As part of the primary ressonant circuit why not use the clouds capacitance ?

because you don't know the values.

I am wondering about other ways of tapping the atmospheric energy. what if we paint a weather balllon with graphite and set it in a kite string?

The project might work if you could `tease` the strike point by creating coordinated
dynamic field shifts around a selected ground electrode.

Then energy side is a bit dicey. Lightning can split a small tree. A thermal
analysis could show how many watts this took. The problem is, the length of
the stroke is a resistive column that dissipated the same energy per
unit length as it it did in the tree, unless you think the stroke is superconductive
to an extent..

The tree exploded because the water absorbed just enough energy to break
the conductor path of the stroke, causing it `to lose its conductivity` .

A lightning rod does exactly the same thing as a tree, but not vaporize,
as Ben Franklin found out. The energy loss to quench the ark, comes about in the
earth returns for the rod system.

Your project probably could get more energy out a local thunderstorm cell by harvesting
all the small field intensifications experienced, without tripping the main bang. The fixation
of nitrogen (NH3) on the globe is partially due to lightning.

How to find these? Well in a long power line, at the substations, during a storm,
the ground detector relays, all chatter a bit, and sometime trip, lightning or not.

For years these were mechanical, and had to be adjusted like clocks. Now they
are processor controlled, and data harvesting is possible.

Imagine trying to harness the output of just a decent sized tesla coil... how many even have a probe that can measure it's output. If you were serious about trying something like this and wanted to work beyond theory a TC's output would be the place to start.

And of course we have all thought about this at one point or another... what if.
